How to Join Twitter

If you want to know how to join Twitter, simply visit the Twitter signup page on https://twitter.com/signup - it is self explanatory, but here is an explanation of what you will find there.

You will be presented with four boxes to fill in:

FULL NAME This should be your real name, though it will not be displayed on your Twitter page. It is purely for security, though nobody will know if you use a false name.

USER NAME This will be the name by which you are known on Twitter, and most use a nickname than can be either an imaginative nickname such as 'Speedster' or your own first or second name. Because there will be many Twitter users with your name, you will generally have to use a number after it when you join Twitter, such as Jane84. Mine is Spidered and you are welcome to follow me - I will follow you in turn if you want.

PASSWORD You must register a password when you join Twitter. You can use any password of your choice, but try to make it not easy to find, but easy for you to remember. It is best to use a combination of letters and numbers, but not your birthday or age. An example could be the first or last three letters of your first school combined with the first or last three numbers of your passport or your best friend's birthday.

Email Address Your email address is not displayed publicly on Twitter, and you underneath this box is a small box to tick if you want others to be able to find you on Twitter from your email address rather than just your user name (nickname). If you leave that blank then nobody will be ably to find you except by your nickname.

You will then see the 'Terms Of Service' that you must agree to stick to before you can join. You are advised to read them since if you break the TOS then you are liable to be barred from Twitter for life. This is a scrollable box that also includes their Privacy Policy, and by clicking on the 'Create My Account' button you accept the TOS and your account is created.

Once you join twitter the service is easy use. You are allowed 140 characters (including spaces and punctuation) for each tweet, but you can tweet as often as you like. You will also be able to generate a Profile and check out the Twitter site to find all the other options available to you.
